Goodbye Road Hogs! What Does the New Law Bring?

Law No. 7574, which introduced significant amendments to Law No. 2918 on Road Traffic, was published in the Official Gazette No. 33181 dated February 27, 2026.

The main changes introduced by the Law are as follows:

Additional violation types: Persistently following another vehicle with the intent of assault, or getting out of a vehicle under this purpose, violating bicycle lanes or paths (only bicycles and electric scooters are allowed to use these), arbitrarily stopping vehicles on the road in a way that partially or completely obstructs the flow of traffic in a manner that hinders or endangers the passage of other vehicles are now subject to penalties,

Severe penalties for fleeing after an accident: In fatal or injury-causing traffic accidents, drivers who leave the scene without the permission of the police, except in cases of necessity, will face imprisonment and temporary suspension of their driver's license,

New status for motorcycles: The legal responsibility of motorbike (motorcycle) drivers has been removed from general provisions and included within the scope of the Law,

Entry ban for foreigners: If administrative fines imposed on a foreigner, which cannot be collected until their departure from Türkiye cannot be collected upon their re-entry, the foreign national will not be allowed to enter Türkiye,

Liability for rental vehicles: The responsibilities and obligations of the licensed carrier will not be eliminated if the traffic violation is carried out using a rental vehicle,

Warning to social media enthusiasts: Publicly disseminating and praising images that encourage traffic rule violations by sharing any action prohibited by law through press, publications, internet, social and digital media, or other electronic devices is subject to penalties.

The provision of the Law that excludes motorbikes from general provisions and includes them within its scope will enter into force on January 1, 2027, while the other articles entered into force on February 27, 2026.
